Administration Announces Government Employee Job Cuts as Shutdown Approaches Three-Week Mark
The White House disclosed the initiation of federal worker terminations on the end of the week, following through on prior threats in response to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to extend into its third consecutive week.
Official Announcement and Initial Details
Russell Vought posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the official process for letting employees go.
While Vought did not specify which departments were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that notices had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Also, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.
Union Response and Court Actions
Union leaders cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the moves in court.
“It is disgraceful that the government has exploited the funding lapse as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who deliver essential functions to the public nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.
The AFL-CIO responded to the news, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”
Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute
Congressional Democrats have refused to vote for a GOP-supported bill to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, meaning the deadlock is not expected to be ended before then.
During a press conference, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, criticized opposition lawmakers for rejecting the GOP proposal, which was approved in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.
“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” the speaker stated. Beginning shortly, American service members, many of whom live on tight budgets, are going to miss a full paycheck.”
Judicial and Practical Limits
Last week, unions filed for a court injunction to prevent the government from carrying out any reductions in force during the shutdown. Moreover, a federal judge directed the government to disclose details on termination strategies, affected agencies, and whether any federal employees had been brought back to execute layoffs.
An analysis argued that a funding lapse limits the ability of the government to carry out firings, referencing official advice that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been started before the shutdown began.
Impact on Workers
These terminations took place on the very day that government employees received only a incomplete payment covering the final days of September but excluding the beginning of the current month, since funding expired at the start of the period.
A public service advocate, the president of the advocacy group, criticized the political stalemate’s impact on federal employees.
This is unjust to make government staff bear the burden because our leaders in Congress and the administration have not succeeded to keep our federal operations open and operational,” the advocate stated. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not at fault for this funding crisis.”
The irony is that members of Congress and top administration officials are still receiving salaries during the funding gap.
